Ricky Lauren

Words of Wisdom

I like things that are worn. I don't like newness... I still wear old things. And I wear new things. And the old things that I love are non-fashion. There's a timeless quality and an unfashionable sensibility... they're utility, the things you wear to work in, they're things that have sort of an honesty.

So Simple, So Perfect

This photo literally stopped me in my tracks when I first saw it., and I still find it completely arresting. It's clean, its sexy, its not fussy. Even the hair- its freshly washed and neatly brushed. Maybe next summer i'll be feeling the waves again, but this is perfect for the transition to winter, for having the hair that your mother told you to have.

Jessica De Ruiter

I've been closely following this girl before I even knew her name. I, like so many others, was instantly taken with the original image in domino. Her style was masculine, classic, and still sexy. A few more photos on the Sartorialist and I was a goner. Back in the summer of 09 Refinery 29 did a tour of her home and her outfits became my shopping guide. She even got a shout out from Garance Dore.

One of my favorite blogs, Tomboy Style, scored an interview with this amazing lady. So great to hear her voice, and to learn that she went through a grunge-meets-claudia-schiffer phase in the 90s.

Defining Style

I struggle with defining my style. I see admire elements in all of the different tribes, and my favorite is constantly in flux
.
flipping through the photos that I've saved, I've come to realize that my style could most closely be described as the nexus of Grace Kelley and the Grateful Dead.

Turtlenecks

A leading candidate for winter wardrobe's MVP is my big black turtleneck sweater. The cashmere feels sumptuous after a long day on the slopes, and when I pair it with skinny jeans and a blazer I feel like Grace Kelly (or you know, Phoebe Philo).

My winter wardrobe is pretty much the cheap woman's Pheobe Philo.

When the Season Change pt 2

Several weeks ago I went to visit some friends who are now studying at Harvard. It was an absolutely beautiful weekend- blue skies, crisp air, and fall leaves. When I wasn't obsessing about fall in new england, I was able to notice that the harvard student body is quite well dressed. I thought dressing like Oliver Barrett IV went out out of stylewith the advent of affirmative action, but my weekend in cambridge proved me wrong.
Ever since my visit, I've been dreaming of over the top preppy classics. Schoolboy blazers, corduroy, tartan, Barbour jackets and sweaters with elbow patches dance through my mind.

What a Classic

This lady can do no wrong.
My major fear with headscarves is that I'll look more like Eddie B than Jackie O.

Turning Tide

The last couple seasons I've felt a little adrift. I was able to get on the studs bandwagon, but a lot of the other hot trends just fell flat to me. I can't exactly pass for a punk rocker, and I never felt comfortable wearing a bodycon mini. It's not because of my body (though I'll be the first to admit I'm hardly a supermodel. It was more that I didn't feel comfortable dressing in such an overtly sexual, exhibitionist way. Crop tops and mesh just don't do it for me. Dressing like a street walker is neither comfortable, nor sexy.
I feel sexiest when I'm just out of the shower wearing a classic white button down, with my wet hair either pulled into a bun or dripping down my back.
So obviously I'm quite excited about the new tack that most designers seem to be taking. It's like they're embarrassed by their past follies, and are maturing. Many of the outfits are in fact to mature for my current stage of life, but I'm ok with that because finding a style that's "me will be much easier this year than in years past.

“Someone once told me that if you ask a woman What is the favorite thing in your closet?, she’ll pull out her newest dress,” says Jenna Lyons. “If you ask a man, he’ll pull out some tattered old thing he’s had forever. That’s the big difference. And that’s what Andy gets.” Essentially, he understands that men are happy to have their shoes resoled again and again, and that they’d like to buy shoes that deserve it.
